My heart as a music box.
This piece is part of a series of three music boxes that translate an electrical heart monitor readout. The first shows my healthy heart, recorded during an overnight sleep study. The second shows my heart experiencing a series of arrhythmic beats – a problem recorded in a study by my collaborator and friend, after which I was sent for immediate medical treatment. The third sonifies the heartbeat slowly dying, the outcome we feared and that will eventually come. By translating the line of the electrocardiogram into the sickly sweet and sentimental chiming of the music box, the moment of fear is captured as a loving souvignier.
This piece was featured in the 2012 exhibition Some Must Watch While Some Must Sleep at Paper Mountain ARI, Perth.
