Artists Shannon Williamson (NZ) and Loren Kronemyer (USA/AU) have come together to explore this mysterious biological landscape and to render the events of sleep in relief. Taking its title from sleep scientist William Dement’s pivotal 1974 work on sleep and dreaming, ‘Some Must Watch While Some Must Sleep’ is an intimate collaborative exploration into the aesthetics of sleep and its scientific study.
SCROLL PAST POSTERS FOR HOURLY UPDATES
As part of this collaboration, Williamson and Kronemyer are embarking on a unique performance that sees them attempting to perform a 48 hour continuous sleep study. By sleeping and working in shifts, the artists merge to form one entity that is simultaneously asleep and awake, perpetually productive and at rest. In alternating shifts of wakefulness the artists will engage in continuous process of drawing and writing tasks, each shift worker leaving behind prompts for the next before it’s their turn for sleep. On this page, they will leave hourly photographic updates that document their progress, beginning at 8:00 am on Saturday, July 20th and continuing until 8:00 am on Monday, July 22nd.

Performance Insomnia i
You see things best in the dark when you don’t look directly at them. Like sleep. You’ve gotta be smart. Sneak up on it from the side.
A totem for my brain
I bring this on myself again
Still, pallid and limp like the sheets
I believed I was camouflaged
I saw sleep in my periphery
but it didn’t see me
A strange vision/sensation experience around 1pm today (before the wall)
Mapping a rapid descent into misery i
Hypopneas and blood oxygen desaturations.
This is me
hitting a wall after 36 hour of bare minimal sleep
This is me
good bye old friends it’s been swell.
Tape adheres like a second skin after this long.

Another heavily sleepless daytime sleep shift…
Loren is in deep sleep..after 15minutes…
Jealous of your slow waves my love.
countdown : my last hour before the big sleep
time to clean up
last of the light for me
It looks like something to me.
if I’m late in updating,
it’s only because I’ve been very, very busy
You’re so kind
I was reading your diary when
you woke up and signaled me
its like being kids in here
in an imaginary world of our own design
all there is to do is play
Birds are singing

Time goes so fast in the early hours
Finally she’s laying down some green up there.
What’s your score?
A taste of insomnia has scared me.
Time to try again.
I want to find all the pencils and put them back in the tray. Sharpened.
REM POWER POSE
Loren self portrait
While searching my sketch book (for some drawings I did Of Loren REMing in her ‘power pose’) I found the night peeper.
The little peeping mystery bird that we would often hear at random hours of the night/early morning.
Turns out it was a Willy Wagtail.
…I AGREE I HAD SOME REM THOUGH I SEE THE COMPUTER SUSPECTS I HAVE NARCOLEPSY (epoch1342, 18:57)
W:N3(slow wave sleep)
IMAGE: My first epoch of sleep. Non REM1, vertex sharp waves, slow rolling eyes.
An apt representation of me.
I didn’t sleep so well… performance insomnia? caffine?
Loren has been in bed 13 minutes. She is in Stage NonREM2. That lady can sleep at the drop of a freaking hat.
cleared for descent
shannon has finally fallen asleep
shannon still awake but bravely laying prone
a little lonely (though we are both awake)
A little preview of the working notes for an upcoming piece
Shannon is having bad sleep.
when I awoke there was still a few minutes of light in the window
but now it’s gone.
its me now
Good bye for now
the owls are not what they seem
Self wired self
Sleep Scientist Shannon Williamson sets up Artist, Shannon Williamson for a sleep study.
Wake:Non-REM stage 3 SleepThere will be more than continuous posts of paper work… I promise…
There was the sleep set up at 6am- electrodes attached to heads etc. then coffee..for me. Loren was awake alllll night.
Now she’s sleeping.

Hi. I’m a scientist.
IMAGE: Thismorning I find this list of instructions taped to the wall like wee Christmas stocking of goodies from Loren’s sleep deprived head. Dear Loren: What is the ‘Williamson test?’ where is our roster?
