Shift Work : 48 Hours

Artists Shannon Williamson (NZ) and Loren Kronemyer (USA/AU) have come together to explore this mysterious biological landscape and to render the events of sleep in relief. Taking its title from sleep scientist William Dement’s pivotal 1974 work on sleep and dreaming, ‘Some Must Watch While Some Must Sleep’ is an intimate collaborative exploration into the aesthetics of sleep and its scientific study.
SCROLL PAST POSTERS FOR HOURLY UPDATES
SleepFlyer1
As part of this collaboration, Williamson and Kronemyer are embarking on a unique performance that sees them attempting to perform a 48 hour continuous sleep study.  By sleeping and working in shifts, the artists merge to form one entity that is simultaneously asleep and awake, perpetually productive and at rest.  In alternating shifts of wakefulness the artists will engage in continuous process of drawing and writing tasks, each shift worker leaving behind prompts for the next before it’s their turn for sleep.  On this page, they will leave hourly photographic updates that document their progress, beginning at 8:00 am on Saturday, July 20th and continuing until 8:00 am on Monday, July 22nd.

You see things best in the dark when you don’t look directly at them. Like sleep. You’ve gotta be smart. Sneak up on it from the side.

While searching my sketch book (for some drawings I did Of Loren REMing in her ‘power pose’) I found the night peeper.
The little peeping mystery bird that we would often hear at random hours of the night/early morning.
Turns out it was a Willy Wagtail.

Hi. I’m a scientist.
IMAGE: Thismorning I find this list of instructions taped to the wall like wee Christmas stocking of goodies from Loren’s sleep deprived head. Dear Loren: What is the ‘Williamson test?’ where is our roster?
